The First Note Choir is designed to be a great supplement to after school choirs, and school music programs. For students who love to sing, and want a little more experience, this is the place! Students will develop skills in solfege, rhythm and sight singing, ear training and singing in harmony. In addition, children’s chorus students will be taught proper vocal production and diction.
A variety of literature will be explored including art songs, folk songs and spirituals, holiday, pop and Broadway. This choir will perform sacred as well secular Christmas music in the December concert.
Choreography will be incorporated as appropriate. Regular rehearsal attendance is required, as are certain performances.
Sign up here for VPA Choir Auditions. Auditions will be held at Sherwood Senior Center. There are different times for different choirs. Please prepare 32 bars of music to sing and bring sheet music for an accompanist (no pop music please) or bring an accompaniment track. There will be a written test for all choirs except First Note Choir & Sherwood Chorale. Print an audition form to bring with you. See list of forms on audition page.
DATE: See Audition Page and Sign up for Details.
LOCATION: Sherwood Senior Center
Who Can Participate?
Boys and girls in 4th – 6th grades. No previous choir experience is required.
Child friendly auditions are held in May, September and January (or October by special appointment). Returning members do not need to audition. Children need to show the ability to carry a tune by singing a familiar song with accompaniment, singing some vocal exercises, and by echo matching a series 3 consecutive pitches. Children may audition in groups of 2-3 kids singing My Country Tis of Thee, or alone with a song of their choice.
If a student wishes to sing their own song, they should bring a copy of it for the director to follow, and should sing accompanied with a recording or at the piano.
Please bring an audition form with a photo attached to the audition.

VPA strives to give participants many opportunities to perform. Our Christmas Concert is held in December and our Spring Benefit Concert is held in May. Additional performances are planned for October and February. See our choir calendar for details.
