Keynotes Show Choir

This choir’s emphasis is Pop and Show tunes with choreography and dancing, building on proper vocal technique and musicianship at a more advanced level. The choir repertoire may also include other genres. A strong understanding of music and experience on stage is needed, and dancing experience is desirable. Singers will continue to develop their skills in ear training, vocal technique, and musicianship as they incorporate choreography and dance. Note this choir will perform sacred as well secular Christmas music in the December concert. Regular rehearsal attendance and a year long commitment is required for this choir of guys. It is a performing choir, so performances are mandatory as well.

NEW for the 2016-2017 school year, Keynotes will be an all guys choir, and will also perform a joint number with Gracenotes all gals choir.  Rehearsals for these 2 choirs are at the same time, so joint work will be part of the regular schedule.

Who Can Participate–Note the Change for 2016-2017:

Prerequisite—3+ years of choir experience. Dance, musical theater or show choir experience recommended. This is an advanced show choir.

Open to boys only 9th – 12th grades. Home school students welcome.

Auditions Required:

An audition is required for new members only. Returning members do not need to re-audition. Auditions are held each May for the following year.  Limited auditions may be possible in September upon director’s discretion.

How to Audition:

  1. Sing about 32 bars of a song of choice using good diction, intonation and vocal production.  Recommended genres are Broadway, hymns, folk or art songs.  Please avoid Pop music. Do provide music for the director and bring a recording to sing with or an accompanist. Please do not ask to sing unaccompanied.
  2. Sight read a 10 note solfège pattern using hand signals or a 10 note traditionally notated phrase using a neutral syllable.
  3. Sing a vocal exercise such as a descending major scale on AH.
  4. Complete a written test. Test includes note naming in treble and bass clef, labeling rhythms with numbers 1 & 2 & etc., and basic terminology such as dynamics and articulation expressions, solfege major and minor scales, vocal technique concepts, and musical term definitions.
  5. Learn a short dance routine during the audition, then show proficiency in style, technique and stage presence by performing it at the end of the audition.

Our program is designed to be the length of each school year. For the 2016-2017 school year, rehearsals will be Tuesdays from 3:15-4:45 PM for dance and Thursdays from 3:15-4:30 PM for vocal at the Marjorie Stewart Senior Center, 21907 Southwest Sherwood Boulevard, Sherwood, OR 97140.

Tuition is $550 for this choir for the whole school year. Students will also need to purchase a Choir Polo Shirt (approx. $15) which is the same for all choirs and can be reused each year if properly maintained and if it still fits.

Planned Performances:

VPA strives to give participants many opportunities to perform. Our Christmas Concert is held in December and our Spring Benefit Concert is held in May. Additional performances are planned for October and February.
