Noteworthy Boys Ensemble

This ensemble will address healthy vocal production in the changing male voice. Both unchanged and changed voices are welcome. This choir will focus on music appealing to boys that teaches fundamentals of music, 2-3 part singing, staging, choreography and performance. A theory packet of homework will be assigned as needed to further develop measurable skills at an individual level. Students will develop vocal skills as they explore a variety of music including art songs, folk songs, spirituals, holiday, pop and Broadway music especially suited and appealing to boys. The goal of this class is fun through music that is challenging, yet “cool”. Note this choir will perform sacred as well secular Christmas music in the December concert.

A Dance Extension Class is also available to this group. This class will give the boys an opportunity to learn choreography at a pace and level that will be fun and engaging.

Who Can Participate:

Boys in 6th – 12th grades. Home Schooled students are welcome

Auditions Required:

An audition is required for new members only. Returning members do not need to re-audition. New members may be added after auditions in May, September and January (or October by special appointment). 6th Grade boys with no previous choir experience may be placed in the Children’s Chorus at the discretion of the director.

  • Audition Sign-up Page (follow this link to sign up for an audition time)
  • Audition Form (Print forms from audition page, and bring with you to the audition along with a photo)

The Dance Extension Class is open to all members who wish to participate. Boys will be asked to audition for the Dance Extension Class to determine their personal motivation, aptitude and skill levels. Students will learn a short dance routine during the audition then perform it at the end of the audition. Participating in the extension class is recommended, but not required.

How to Audition:

  1. Please bring an audition form with you with a photo attached.
  2. Come prepared to sing “My Country Tis of Thee, or a song of choice using good diction, intonation and vocal production. Recommended genres are Broadway, hymns, folk or art songs.  Please avoid Pop music. If you bring your own song, provide the music for the director and bring a recording to sing with or an accompanist. Please do not ask to sing unaccompanied.
  3. Vocalize with the director–echo/match groupings of 3 random pitches, and sing an 8 note descending scale.
  4. Show your musical understanding by doing a short written test. The test will be very basic including labeling musical features on choral music, solfege hand signal identification, choir etiquette and basic rhythm concepts. The information gained from the written test will help us in planning for the next year, and should not be a deterrent for auditioning!

Our program is designed to be the length of each school year. For the 2015-2016 school year, vocal rehearsals will be Tuesdays from 4:45-5:45 PM at the Marjorie Stewart Senior Center, 21907 Southwest Sherwood Boulevard, Sherwood, OR 97140. Dance Extension rehearsals will be Tuesdays from 5:45-6:30 PM.

Tuition is $325 for this choir for the whole school year. The Dance Extension class is an additional $75 for the whole school year. All students will also need to purchase a Choir Polo Shirt (approx. $15) which is the same for all choirs and can be reused each year if properly maintained and if it still fits.

Planned Performances:

VPA strives to give participants many opportunities to perform. Our Christmas Concert is held in December and our Spring Benefit Concert is held in May. Additional performances are planned for October and February.
